Dag likes his girlfriend a lot. Now that she’s pregnant, he realizes he likes her even more than his fiancée—who’s also pregnant. Fortunately he’s figured out how to handle such situations: Hide the truth for as long as possible.

The premise had cobwebs on it when Dudley Moore used it 18 years ago in Micki & Maude, but Brit writer Barrowcliffe makes it work by spewing jokes faster than major corporations go bankrupt. After a sarcastic pal tactfully recommends suicide as the easiest way out of the mess, Dag says, “I don’t want to be remembered as a good man. I want to be experienced as a living bastard.” (St. Martin’s, $24.95)
