John Conlee

The hit single off this album by the Merle Haggard sound-alike is I’m Only in It for the Love, but that’s far from the most interesting track. There’s a sprightly cover of the Eric Clapton hit Lay Down Sally, and Conlee performs An American Trilogy—Mickey Newbury’s combined arrangement of Dixie, The Battle Hymn of the Republic and All My Trials—with quiet emotion. Conlee struggles a little with the vocal demands of Randy Sharp’s New Way Out, but generally this is a warm, pleasing country LP.
