This is an old-fashioned, three-hankie job in the Love Story mold. Except in this case the filmmakers have opted for a heavy dose of realism: The story is based on the case of a woman whose cancer, curable if it had been caught early, was misdiagnosed, allowing the disease to spread and finally claim her life. Like Love Story, this film sloshes over with cutesy-poo dialogue. But star Susan Dey (L.A. Law) shines in a wrenching and believable performance—no Ali MacGraw deathbed glamour here. Dey and Anthony (Crime Story) Denison, as her lover, have a wonderful chemistry and create characters you can’t help but fall in love with. Even at its bleakest—and most sentimental-moments, I Love You Perfect, co-produced by Dey and Stephen J. Cannell, is surprisingly uplifting.
