April Sinclair

Beach book of the week

This latest novel from Sinclair (Coffee Will Make You Black) is light and quick and packed with enough issues to keep a daytime talk show host busy. Protagonist Daphne “Dee Dee” Dupree, 41, a radio deejay in Chicago, is a single, overweight incest survivor who’s looking for love. Her unsparing observations keep her friends—Sharon, a lesbian, Jade, an unhappily married belly dancer, and Sarita, a working mother with money troubles—very much on their toes. And as Dee Dee begins to shed weight and confront her childhood, love does enter her life. Readers who can withstand the fusillade of clichés about a good man being hard to find will enjoy Sinclair’s inspiring yarn. (Hyperion, $22.95)

Bottom Line: Entertaining coming-of-middle-age tale
