Australian actor Chris Lilley’s performance on the HBO comedy Ja’mie: Private School Girl is a phenomenal impersonation – inhabitation – of a female adolescent. He becomes Ja’mie, who has tricked up her name from Jamie to the more pretentious Jah-may, without much more than a wig and gestures. Ja’mie’s furious will to dominate one and all – she is possibly the meanest mean girl since Vanity Fair’s Becky Sharp – is of an awfulness that of course knows no sex. Lilley nails that too.
