J.D. Souther

He’s best known as Linda Ronstadt’s ex-boyfriend. Souther is also an intelligent, trenchant songwriter of the Gloomy Gus school. Ronstadt’s version of his Faithless Love, her duet with him on Hearts Against the Wind and the Eagles’ The Best of My Love are only three of the successful tunes Souther has written or co-written. His singing career has never dented anyone’s consciousness too seriously, and he’s not likely to threaten Pavarotti in the pipes department. This is a splendid album, nonetheless, with such love songs as All for You and All I Want, the moody Go Ahead and Rain and the gently rocking Bad News Travels Fast: “Just a poor little heartbroken parvenu/With a tragic face/Just one more dreamer who never could/Find the time or the place.” Souther is backed by old buddies such as Waddy Wachtel and Josh Leo and ex-Eagles Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit. Ronstadt shows up too for a lovely duet on the Souther/Danny Kortchmar song Say You Will. This is a splendid album, just the thing for anyone planning to stay up late to do some heavy thinking about romance. (Warner Bros.)
