Jazz purists may scorn the pop influences evident on High Crime, but everyone else should be delighted. Jay Graydon, who produced the album in addition to playing guitar and synthesizer and co-writing and arranging most of the tunes, has provided a glossy backdrop for Jarreau’s powerful pipes. High Crime shifts through three speeds with synchromesh ease. There is the frisky pop of Murphy’s Law and Tell Me, on which Al uncorks some dizzying scat. This is mixed with such moving love songs as After All, similar to Boz Scaggs’ Harbor Lights. Finally, High Crimes contains the churning funk of Let’s Pretend, the title cut, and Imagination. All of these bound along with crisp horn arrangements and choice guitar playing by Graydon and/ or Paul Jackson. Jarreau also produces some marvelous percussive effects with his supple voice getting away with High Crime in style. (Warner Bros.)
