Joe Waters

Back home in Chillicothe, Ohio, they call him “Appalachia Joe,” and Waters’ tunes do speak of stills, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Civil War. His lyrics have a crude folksiness that is clearly not accidental: In The Queen of Hearts Loves You, he writes, “So I went on out to Hollywood/To take Clark Gable’s place/But ended up a stuntman/ Takin’ punches in the face.” While the effect seems strained at times, Waters does offer a basic down-home style rare in the Nashville era.
