Trick or treat takes on a whole new meaning with this grisly little horror film. A 6-year-old boy knifes his sister to death on Halloween. Fifteen years later the killer escapes from a mental hospital and returns to his hometown for more mayhem—again on October 31. Although there isn’t even a ghost of an explanation for his choice of night or victims, there are scares aplenty. The cast is mostly unknowns except for an evil-looking Donald Pleasence and Operation Petticoat survivor Jamie Lee Curtis, the 20-year-old daughter of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. She is convincingly terrified as the plucky teenage babysitter who tangles with the killer. But why, audiences will wonder, doesn’t she turn on the lights when she enters a dark room? Why does she lock herself in a closet instead of running away? Only her scriptwriter knows for sure. (R)
