Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Xzibit

REVIEWED BY JASON LYNCH

DRAMA

One day the law of averages will catch up with Dwayne Johnson, and he’ll find a movie that can harness his Herculean charisma, not just his pecs. Until then, he’ll keep struggling valiantly in garden-variety films like Gridiron Gang, based on the story of a juvenile detention camp officer (Johnson) who whips his charges into shape by transforming them into a football team, the Camp Kilpatrick Mustangs. Gang shows that if you work hard enough, you can overcome anything … except a script stocked with sports film clichés. Whenever Johnson exhorts his charges to “accept the Mustang challenge,” he sounds like an overexuberant Ford dealer. (PG-13)
