For a number of years, San Francisco high school teacher Robert Valverde has assigned his students to carry around and watch over five-pound sacks of flour for three weeks to give them some idea of the responsibilities of parenthood. Linda (Alice) Lavin directed this School-break Special, which dramatizes Valverde’s lesson in a simple, unambiguous fashion. All right, maybe it’s a little too unambiguous. At times you’ll get the creeping sensation that you’re watching the matinee at a Lutheran teen retreat. But Lavin is helped by a fresh, appealing cast, especially Susan Vanech as the sweet ingenue and Ian Ziering as her track-star lothario.
