Kenny Rogers and Dottie West

The best country duos—Dolly and Porter, George and Tammy, Conway and Loretta—create new sounds that, if they aren’t greater than the sum of their parts, are at least distinctive. Kenny and Dottie just sound like two people who happen to be singing in the same studio at the same time. This hasn’t kept their single of the title song from becoming a hit, but even on that otherwise pleasant tune Rogers’ soft sound mixed with West’s tough, gutsy drive does not seem like a match made in Hillbilly Heaven.
