Rex Smith

Teen dream Rex might have stopped with the first word of the title, since that’s how this collection of wimpy ballads and timid rockers seems. He’s momentarily rescued by a duet with Rachel Sweet on the 1967-vintage title cut, but that’s because it’s a dandy tune. The otherwise unmemorable Robert Knight, in 1967, and Carl Carlton, in 1974, proved that with earlier hit versions. Rex was pretty fluffy before he became a Broadway baby with his lead role in The Pirates of Penzance; even now he still belongs musically with the likes of Donny Osmond, ABBA and Alvin the Chipmunk.
