George Jones and Johnny Paycheck

Talk about strange chemistry. These two maestros of honky-tonk macho ought to mix no better than bourbon and tequila, but strangely their odd coupling works. It hardly matters that they stray from their country roots, seeming almost soulful on such old R&B hits as Maybellene, Roll Over, Beethoven, Tutti Frutti, Smack Dab in the Middle and Along Came Jones. On the LP’s hit single, When You’re Ugly Like Us (You Just Naturally Got to Be Cool), they get uncomfortably close to Amos ‘n’ Andy dialect. Otherwise, though, that tune is a likable put-on that ends with Paycheck lamenting, “Too bad we ain’t pretty like Willie, George.”
