Beach Book of the Week

Detective Dave Robicheaux of the New Iberia sheriff’s office was a student diving in the waters off Baton Rouge when he saw his first Nazi submarine, a wreck left over from World War II. Nearly 50 years later he’s back at sea, hunting for a long-sunken sub and buried treasure; he’s also caught in an old-fashioned Mob war and squaring off with a crazed neo-Nazi named Will Buchalter.

The resulting jambalaya boils out to be the best book in the Robicheaux series. The previous six have all been solid, but this one is masterful. Steeped in passion and intrigue, it also boasts an ending that will resonate after the last wave of summer rolls to the shore. (Hyperion, $22.95)
