From This Moment On

REVIEWED BY V.R. PETERSON

JAZZ

When Krall collaborated with husband Elvis Costello on 2004’s The Girl in the Other Room, she created an introspective set of sly originals while smartly covering the likes of Joni Mitchell, Mose Allison and Tom Waits. With Moment she sticks to the standards, revisiting George Gershwin’s breezy “I Was Doing Alright” and Irving Berlin’s joyous “Isn’t This a Lovely Day.” As always, Krall’s honey-roasted vocals prove too skilled to be boring yet too generic to truly astound. Still, her assured, slightly bluesy piano playing perfectly fits the savvy arrangements for the quartet and big-band numbers like “Day In, Day Out” that make this Moment as enjoyable as it is familiar.
