His best and brightest list included Geoffrey Wolff’s biography of his father, Duke of Deception, and three novels: Scott Spencer’s Endless Love, Jim Harrison’s Legends of the Fall, and Sophie’s Choice. He admired Willie Nelson’s Stardust LP and James Earl Jones’ performance as Paul Robeson on PBS. His movie kudos went to Breaking Away, The Onion Field and The China Syndrome. His main grievance: “Howard Cosell’s World Series performance was a monstrosity.”
