>TAKES ON MATERNAL MORTALITY

YOUR DOCUMENTARY NO WOMAN, NO CRY IS ABOUT THE RISK OF DYING IN CHILDBIRTH.

After I had my daughter Grace in 2003, I hemorrhaged. I learned shortly thereafter that it was the leading cause of maternal death in the world. I was so lucky, and I had survivor’s guilt.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT MAKING THIS FILM?

The randomness of it all. Had we not been there to transport this one woman to the hospital in Tanzania, who knows what would have happened?

DID YOUR HUSBAND, DIRECTOR ED BURNS, HELP OUT?

He was an angel. I was gone a lot for a year and a half. He was holding down the home front. Then in the editing room, he was incredibly helpful. He knew just how to make sure there was drama.
