Were you a comic-book fan before being cast in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
I have six brothers, so I grew up with superheroes instead of princesses. To me, being in a Marvel show is the equivalent of being a Disney princess to most girls.
What was it like being the only girl among six boys?
I have a ragtag family in Chicago, with three biological brothers, two foster brothers and one adopted brother. They all played sports; one of them ended up in the NBA. I’m bad at sports so I started acting.
You also sing! In your teens you were a pop star in China.
Some people worked at malls. I just did something a little different. I don’t consider myself a singer, though. I feel like I was just playing a character. But I’m half-Chinese so I’d love to go back to visit.
You were on Nashville but you didn’t sing.
I did have to sing for my audition. I would love to sing for a part. Maybe there will be a musical episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. where we all just rap and sing. [Laughs.] My costar Clark Gregg loves to rap.
