NBC (8 p.m. ET)

The Silverman network is banking a not-so-small fortune on this 26-hour version, probably stretched over 13 weeks, of James Michener’s 1976 epic novel of a Colorado town. In the first segments tough guy Robert Conrad has the best typecasting of his career as a trader who beds beauties and fights Indians. Sally Kellerman, Richard Chamberlain and the location photography are all superb too. The idea is to out-Nielsen Roots. Good luck.
