by Wilbur Pippin and Marian Winters

There seem to be hundreds of collections of cat pictures published every year, and this one includes the basic selection of cuddly, cunning and cold-looking kitties—a few of them not exactly in focus. But it has a gimmick. Pippin, a fashion photographer, and Winters, a Tony-and Emmy-winning actress-playwright, have captioned the photos with famous quotations. The Boswell line, “I would choose to make a bargain with a good decent family who have every day a tolerable dinner,” accompanies a cat looking wishfully in a window. Petrarch’s “Where you are is of no moment, but only what you are doing there” adjoins a cat up a tree. Insatiable felinophiles will lap it up. (Knopf, $4.95)
