Archive Picks and Pans Review: Carryin'on the Family Names By People Staff Published on July 6, 1981 12:00 PM Share Tweet Pin Email David Frizzell and Shelly West David, 39, is one of seven siblings of country music’s storied Lefty Frizzell, who died in 1975 at 47 after a potholed career that has been celebrated by such admirers as Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. West, 23, is the daughter of Dottie West, the gutsy singer who has had a distinguished solo career yet is best known as Kenny Rogers’ duet partner. This is their first album, and they don’t really carry the family names much further. Frizzell, whose voice has the twang and pang of his brother’s, is by far the more interesting performer. His solo on a tribute tune is probably the LP’s most moving track, though West’s sometimes uncertain, rugged alto adds a pleasing touch to the LP’s hit single, You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma. The lyrics of that tune and another—Darling, Will You Marry Me Again—verge on self-parody, though, even if that’s no sin in Nashville.
