Jake Gyllenhaal, Marley Shelton, Swoosie Kurtz

Did no one notice while they were making Bubble Boy that its teenage hero (Gyllenhaal), who lives in a plastic bubble because he has a deficient immune system, looks exactly like singer K.D. lang? He’s got the jagged haircut, the hurting eyes and he’s wont to twang away on a guitar. His resemblance to lang (and the reasons why) is far more intriguing than anything else onscreen in this misbegotten comedy, a road movie about Jimmy’s adventures as he bounces across the country from California to Niagara Falls to stop the wedding of his true love (Shelton) to a boorish cad. Kurtz, as Jimmy’s overprotective mother, plays her role as if Boy were a meaningful absurdist comedy. ‘Tain’t so. (PG-13)
