Working on a Dream

He may be turning 60 this year, but Bruce Springsteen clearly has no intention of slowing down: He started working on his new album while he was finishing up his last one, the only 16-month-old Magic, and recorded it with the E Street Band during breaks on tour. With many of these songs itching to be taken on the road, Dream continues the classic-Springsteen revival of Magic. Just check out the rollicking arena rock of “My Lucky Day” or the blue-collar heroine of “Queen of the Supermarket.” The latter, with its orchestral splendor, practically sweeps you off your feet, as does “This Life,” with its romantic sentiments and Beach Boys harmonies. But the eight-minute gunslinger epic “Outlaw Pete” packs the biggest bang, harmonica and all.
