The funniest book to come along this year is this picture-filled paperback which admits right away that “the material comes from far too many diverse sources to credit each one individually, even if all the original sources were known.” The rambling, quite possibly out-of-context quotes are organized (more or less) under pretentious headings: “Biographical Fragments,” “Writing & Performing,” “The Albums.” Dylan says remarkable things: “Renaldo & Clara is not meant to put a strain on you. It’s a movie to be enjoyed as a movie. I know nothing about film, I’m not a filmmaker. On the other hand, I do consider myself a filmmaker because I made this film.” How about another: “I found myself writing this song, this long piece of vomit, about 20 pages long, and out of it I took Like a Rolling Stone and it made it as a single and I’d never written anything like that before and it suddenly came to me that that was what I should do…I mean, nobody had ever done that before.” The book rolls on, stoned. The design is stylishly trashy. (Quick Fox, $4.95)
