If you have only one Crosby album, this wouldn’t be a bad choice, since it has original recordings of such still-appealing hits as White Christmas, I Surrender, Dear and a jazzed-up Deep in the Heart of Texas. It is hoped that MCA will rerelease the old Decca sets Bing: A Musical Autobiography and Bing’s Hollywood, which include the best of Crosby’s warm and wistful tunes from the ’30s and ’40s. The more enterprising Crosby lovers can also seek out reissues featuring jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, Crosby’s friend and fellow sideman with Paul Whiteman in the ’20s. Crosby turns up on many Beiderbecke cuts, singing with a scatty drive he later subdued.
