The marathon king’s favorite movie was Breaking Away, the bummer of the year Superman. He considered John Irving’s The World According to Garp brilliant, but found Marilyn French’s feminist The Women’s Room “too extreme.” Musically, he voted for “all of Van Morrison’s stuff.” On the tube, he liked the syndicated Wild, Wild World of Animals and ABC’s Studs Lonigan—”the guy who played Studs [Harry Hamlin] was so terrific, when he died I nearly fell on the ground.” His TV enemies list includes “all detective, doctor and motorcycle cop shows, all soap operas and stuff about Southern sheriffs. They are just blechh.”
