Since Carlton Fisk’s home run won the sixth game of the 1975 World Series, Boston Red Sox fans have had little to cheer. They eventually lost that Series, the 1978 divisional tiebreaker to the Yankees, Fred Lynn and Fisk. Gammons, a Boston sportswriter, candidly chronicles those losses with admiration for most Red Sox players. He quotes ex-manager Don Zimmer describing outfielder Dwight Evans: “Next to [Jim] Rice, he’s the strongest guy on the team and one of the strongest players in baseball, and he’s got all the balls of a female cow.” (Houghton Mifflin, $15.95)
