Affleck took a big risk when he signed on to play Hollywoodland‘s frustrated TV Superman George Reeves—a complex role in a low-budget period piece. But Affleck’s first starring turn since 2004 may be his meatiest performance yet. Affleck, 34, says he knew he had the life experience to pull it off. “I did popcorn stuff, and I found myself trapped inside this whole tabloid situation,” he says. “There were things [about Reeves] that I identified with—this idea that you are someone other than what the outside world sees. I lived my own research.” Hollywoodland director Allen Coulter says he and Affleck had “endless conversations” about the real-life Reeves. Says Affleck: “I think of George as a guy who never really got a fair shake.”
