Meat Loaf

The title track of this debut album showcases the fierce power of the gargantuan Meat Loaf, a 260-pound Texas-bred former white-gospel shouter who ended up in the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Composer/ keyboardist Jim Steinman adds his lurid purple rock verse (“Then I’m dying at the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun/ Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike”). These lyrics aren’t Easy Rider, Easy Listening or Easy Reading, for that matter, but the music, produced by the meticulous Todd Rundgren, has the raw, clean and simple drive that is instantly evident in Loaf’s live performances. But more than anything else, the LP contains the whiff of filet mignon—next time out.
