Larry Coryell, the renowned acoustic and electric jazz-rock guitarist, joins drummer Alphonse Mouzon, another jazz-rock star, for a novel fusion of talents. (The two are superbly helped out by John Lee on bass and Philip Catherine on guitar.) The music is more visceral than Coryell’s previous work with the cerebral group Eleventh House. And Mouzon, who’s given to flash overplaying, achieves power with restraint to hold things together. The result, when it works best—as on the title track and Reconciliation—is a rare blend of funk and lyrical instrumental finesse so lacking in most R & B (or disco) projects.
