This occasionally tedious novel becomes a highly rewarding experience for the reader who plugs away to the end. Most of the story takes place in Iowa, where an acting troupe settles for a season, doing repertory. Anya, organizer-director of the theater, and Mac, a practical Mr. Fixit, become lovers and are changed by the experience. The characters are extraordinarily real—so much so that one is convinced this is the way today’s young people live and think and love. (Atheneum, $9.95)
