Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles: A reserved Japanese man (Ken Takakura) travels across China to mend fences with his dying son. Hero director Zhang Yimou triumphs again. Subtitled. (PG)

Beerfest: To defend their German grandfather’s honor, two brothers and their friends compete at the Olympics of beer-chugging games. The latest from comedy troupe Broken Lizard (Super Troopers) won’t leave viewers with much of a buzz unless watched in a dorm room packed with friends, and kegs. (R)

Looking for Kitty: A lousy P.I. (Edward Burns) helps a high school baseball coach (David Krumholtz) search for his wife in New York City. A buddy movie without chemistry, Kitty looks ugly (it was shoddily shot on video) and sounds even worse, thanks to another clunker script from writer-director Burns. (R)
