The carnage of World War I is revived in this ambitiously mounted, superbly photographed yet dramatically hobbled adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s famed antiwar novel. Delbert Mann’s lethargic direction buries worthy efforts by Donald Pleasence, Ian Holm, Patricia Neal, Richard Thomas, 600 extras from the Czech army and, especially, Ernest Borgnine as a seasoned NCO.
