Wagner, who plays Frisco Jones on the soap opera General Hospital, seems to be trying to follow in the footsteps, or at least the vocal tracks, of soaper-turned-singer Rick Springfield. Like Springfield, Wagner has a steely, aggressive rock ‘n’ roll style and a voice that, when it can manage to pierce the overdubbing by producers Glen Ballard and Clif Magness, seems capable of some nuance. While this five-track LP is full of drearily bland rock tunes—such as Make Me Believe It and Sneak Attack—the title ballad has a tender moment or two and Wagner, at 24, deserves a listen. (If we didn’t know this, we could tell because Quincy Jones signed Wagner to his label and Jones hasn’t made a mistake since 1967 or so.) Wagner probably shouldn’t cash in his soap chips quite yet, but he certainly is far from embarrassing himself. (Qwest).
