WB (Fridays, 9:30 p.m. ET)

This uneven sitcom may not be able to fulfill its potential without turning into a drama.

Likable Anthony Anderson plays Anthony, a struggling New York actor and single dad who moves back to his parents’ L.A. home with his 8-year-old son (Damani Roberts). The kid is cute, Grandma Flo (Roz Ryan) has warmth, and there’s a bubbly med student (Aimee Garcia) renting a room in the house. But none of that matters next to the simmering hostility between Anthony and his father, Joe (John Amos).Joe constantly belittles Anthony, and his gibes are more painful than funny. When Anthony hits back, the show gets close to a kind of truth that it’s not really brave enough to confront.
