Bill Evans

The title tells the story. Evans, the jazz pianist who has won five Grammys and five down beat polls, demonstrates a powerful affinity for this album’s co-star, Belgian harmonica master Jean “Toots” Thielemans, in their first enterprise together. Thielemans is resourceful and emotional, Evans atypically subdued, and they are beautifully complementary. Backed by reed man Larry Schneider, they play such standards as Body and Soul, Days of Wine and Roses and Paul Simon’s/Do It for Your Love. Their quiet version of Gordon Jenkins’ tune This Is All I Ask is full of lovely exchanges between Evans and Thielemans. It’s a masterpiece.
