This is a sort of video diary of U2’s 1984 European tour. There may even be a message somewhere in the tangle of ominous images that are mixed with footage of a sweaty Bono and the boys in concert and on the road. Nuclear-reactor cooling towers are juxtaposed with an empty concert stadium. And there are also the usual slow-motion nods to urban blight, barges and bridges—scenes that seem to appear in all U2 videos. What saves this one from monotony is the energy of the music and the power of Bono’s performance. When a lead singer and his song are this good, the video should have more of him and less symbolism.
