Colin Farrell, Robin Wright Penn, Sissy Spacek

This is the movie in which Farrell, for all those who missed his smashing American film debut in Tigerland (2000) and perhaps thought he was just a tabloid bad boy, proves he can act. He soulfully and sensitively portrays Bobby, a Cleveland youth who, after losing his family in the 1970s, spends the next two decades, first in Manhattan and then in a rural town, trying to attach himself to or create a new family. Based on a novel by Michael Cunningham (who also wrote the screenplay), the bittersweet World is about Bobby’s shifting relationships, gay and straight, and how family is where you find it. Also creating vivid impressions are Wright Penn, as a free-spirited older woman who falls for Bobby, Dallas Roberts as a boyhood buddy who loves him and Spacek as Roberts’s understanding mom. (R)
