The eldest son of the project-dwelling Evanses, Jimmie Walker’s J.J. was a cad whose signature holler—”Dy-no-mite!”—endeared him to millions of Good Times viewers. But black critics weren’t amused by Walker (now a comedian in L.A.). Says psychiatrist and former Cosby consultant Alvin Poussaint: “J.J. wasa minstrel stereotype many people find nonthreatening.” Sadly, he adds, “Many of today’s images aren’t much better.”
