>In The Longest Way Home, Andrew McCarthy, 49, tracks his journey from ’80s star to travel writer (and dad)

WHY TRAVEL WRITING?

I travel as some people go to therapy: I find myself by sort of making myself vulnerable in the world. And as an actor, I know how to tell a story.

ARE YOU RECOGNIZED ON THE ROAD?

The guy from Pretty in Pink! I get recognized in the oddest places. In Berlin when the Wall came down…

DO YOU KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THE OLD GANG?

I rarely see them. I ran into Jon Cryer for the first time in 20 years, and that was nice. And I just bought Molly [Ringwald’s] book.

YOU’RE MARRIED WITH TWO KIDS. HAVE THEY SEEN YOUR FILMS?

No. They’re 10 and 6; they’re not particularly curious.

YOU’VE GOT A BIG BIRTHDAY COMING UP

For a while it was kind of messing with my head. Now it’s just like, “Wow. I’m really old!”
