In a gripping thriller based on a true story, a sicko (Peter Strauss) kidnaps a wealthy developer’s daughter and buries her in a capsule with limited life-support mechanisms.
The story unfolds with an effective narrative device: via flashbacks as Strauss resentfully and manipulatively undergoes psychiatric evaluation (conducted by Paul Winfield) in jail. Robert Urich is quite good as the father; ditto Samantha (Extreme Close-Up) Mathis as his inhumed daughter. Strauss gives a hypnotic performance as the sociopath, all the more frightening for his intelligence and fastidiousness.
One of the differences between feature films and TV movies is that tube flicks, even the good ones, are unable to sustain an uninterrupted mood over the course of their 90-plus minutes. This one has fewer dead spots than most.
