For folks zooming along Interstate 80, a quick detour leads to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library/Museum in West Branch, Iowa. Here “39 Men,” a display of presidential memorabilia, is on view until Oct. 30. On hand are locks of hair from the first 14 Presidents, John Adams’ baby rattle and what look like a pair of ladies’ silk stockings. Stitched with the initials TJ, they belonged to Thomas Jefferson. There’s also Calvin Coolidge’s stationary horse. Allergic to the real critters, the 30th President had built an electric, headless, metal contraption—leather saddle, two speeds—making him history’s first urban cowboy.
