Given the theatrical bravado of his rock group Styx, Dennis De Young’s hopping on the suddenly hip show-tune bandwagon is not such a stretch. But he seems more interested in flexing his powerful vibrato than injecting-life into such standards as “Summertime” and “Someone to Watch over Me.” Except for “Pilate’s Dream” (which he sang in a revival of Jesus Christ Superstar last year), DeYoung ends up sounding like a belt-’em-out windup doll. But what do you expect from the guy who wrote Styx’s “Mr. Roboto”? (Atlantic)
