Talk Dirty |
Other than the irrepressible juggernaut that is “Happy,” Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty”—a Top 5 hit that spawned a viral, celeb-packed video—is probably this spring’s jammiest jam. From the moment that hand-clapping, horn-blowing groove kicks in, everyone within earshot must assume the twerking position. Buoyed by a ridiculously catchy sample from Balkan Beat Box’s “Hermetico” as well as a rap assist from 2 Chainz, this is the track that Usher and Chris Brown wish they had made. Derulo keeps the booty beats bumping for much of the rest of his third album (which, in addition to the title song, features three less memorable cuts recycled from last September’s Tattoos EP). He indulges his posterior obsession with Snoop Dogg and Tyga on “Wiggle” and “Bubblegum,” respectively, while getting kinky with another rapper, Kid Ink, on “Kama Sutra.” For all its sexual bravado, though, Talk Dirty lacks real staying power, losing steam with its monotonous moves and limp ballads like “Vertigo,” a duet with Derulo’s girlfriend Jordin Sparks. But at least the brassy “Trumpets”—on which he wonders, “Is it weird that I hear trumpets when you turn me on?”—gives Derulo another toot-worthy tune.
