The Civil Wars

The Civil Wars |

COUNTRY-FOLK

Although there was some discord leading the Civil Wars to go on hiatus last year, the duo of Joy Williams and John Paul White are back with the follow-up to their Grammy-winning debut, 2011’s Barton Hollow. Whatever their personal issues may be, the two are in complete harmony musically, their voices sliding and melting into each other with the intimacy of intertwined lovers. On largely hushed songs like the aptly titled “Eavesdrop,” you almost feel as if you are listening in on their private conversations. But they display some bite on first single “The One That Got Away,” a bitter breakup song, while the bluesy “I Had Me a Girl” paints them as the country-folk answer to the White Stripes.
