Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Ciaran Hinds | PG-13 |
REVIEWED BY RENNIE DYBALL
It’s got the makings of an up-all-night supernatural thriller: sinister voices emanating from unlikely sources, bizarrely contorted possession victims and the loose promise that it’s all inspired by “true events.” Those who haven’t seen The Exorcist might be genuinely spooked, but for more seasoned viewers, the fear won’t follow you home. Hopkins stars as Father Lucas, a veteran exorcist teaching a skeptical seminary student (O’Donoghue) about demonic possession. The Roman setting is postcard-worthy, and Hopkins’ wry comic relief is almost Hannibal Lecter-esque. But the devil that is standard-issue horror fare takes over The Rite, and in the end it’s just another scary movie.
