Bridesmaids is being touted as a female version of The Hangover. That’s an unfair bar to set, given how easily these ladies sail over it. The raunchy script is cowritten by Wiig, who’s beautifully awkward as sad-sack Annie, jolted by news that pal Lillian (Rudolph) is getting married. Nearly every scene is an exercise in humiliation as Annie is outdone by super-competitive fellow bridesmaid Helen (Byrne), dissed by her cretinous friend-with-benefits Ted (a pitch-perfect Jon Hamm) and pursued by sweet Officer Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd). It would all be excruciating if it weren’t so brazenly hilarious, crushing the damn fool idea that women aren’t funny. In fact, when The Hangover Part II opens May 26, those fellas had better bring it.
