We [love] DREW’s Hair!

FALL HAIR SPECIAL!

We’ve got the scoop on Drew’s gorgeous new hue, Rihanna‘s most jaw-dropping looks (yes, mullet included) and the As Seen on TV tools that are actually worth buying

Her Hairstylist

HOLLI SMITH SAYS:

“Drew’s style is polished, but it looks like her fingers have gone though it. I wanted something natural because that’s who Drew is. I applied a light serum and texturizing spray on her dry hair for a bit of hold. Then I added lift at the front with a vent brush, smoothed out her hair with a paddle brush and loosely curled it with an iron.”

Wella Professionals

Velvet Amplifier, $16; wella.com for salons

Mason Pearson

Boar Bristle & Nylon Hairbrush, $170; beauty.com

Hot Tools

1¼-in. Professional Spring Iron, $43.50; hottools.com for retailers

Redken

Clear Moisture Shampoo, $14.50, and Extreme Conditioner, $15.50; redken.com/salon_finder for locations

Her Colorist

TRACEY CUNNINGHAM SAYS:

“Drew can pull off any color, which I love. For this honey-blonde shade, we did several rounds of highlights over six weeks, conditioning in between. I sent her home with two sets of shampoos and conditioners: one to add moisture into hair and another that has protein to strengthen hair.”

Rihanna‘s Changing Hairstyles

On any given day, the star is apt to go from raven to blonde or from long and tousled to short and shaved. Her hairstylists Yusef Williams and Ursula Stephen explain all

May 4, 2013

“We wanted to try straight hair for her tour in Brooklyn, but she debuted it at a Nets game instead.” —Yusef

MAY 6, 2013

“I was off, so one of her friends must have curled her hair. She loves to accessorize with hats.” —Yusef

MAY 16, 2013

“She wanted to go lighter, so I added platinum pieces. We keep her roots dark because it’s less taxing on the hair.” —Yusef

JUNE 4, 2013

“Ri and I were watching The First Wives Club and loving Goldie Hawn’s hair. That was the inspiration.” —Yusef

JULY 2, 2013

“The Chanel show was early, so we went with easy hair. I blew it out a little and flipped her bangs.” —Yusef

JULY 11, 2013

“I had recently darkened her roots. I had a day off between shows, so she did this makeshift pony herself.” —Yusef

JULY 22, 2013

“The gray idea came to me out of nowhere. Ri, Brad Baker (the colorist) and I named the hair ‘Brrr.'” —Yusef

AUG. 12, 2013

“She wanted to try a short, curly do. Zac Posen’s hair was one of her inspiration photos.” —Ursula

AUG. 25, 2013

“This was her MTV VMA look. She wanted to go back to a short do. I added a tail in the back.”—Ursula

SEPT. 15, 2013

“Her VMA tail has evolved into a mullet. She likes short hair, but she’s still on tour and needs hair that will move onstage.” —Ursula

HAT’S OFF!

Rihanna‘s fashion stylist Mel Ottenberg weighs in on the star’s headgear. “Rihanna‘s a cool girl with good style instincts. Her accessories push her looks to the next level.”

RETRO SCARF

“She doesn’t follow trends. She wears unexpected pieces like this, effortlessly.”

HEAD WRAP

“We’ve played with fabric in her hair. She was in Morocco, so the wrap is cool.”

VEILED BEANIE

“She’s good friends with the Silver Spoon Attire designers and wears their stuff a lot.”

RAIN CAP

“The Maison Michel cap (with plastic raindrops) is playful. Ri likes to have fun.”

LEATHER VISOR

Rihanna wears this Fleet Ilya visor a lot. The color works with a lot of pieces.”

INSTYLER

Why I Tried It: I have a weakness for hair tools with a power button.

Level of Difficulty: It’s simple. The key is to work in small sections. In just one pass my fine hair went from curly to poker-straight.

The Verdict: It’s a quick fix for flyaways and frizz, which is why I’m stashing it in my office drawer.

TURBIE TWIST

Why I Tried It: I air-dry my hair a lot, but I can’t leave the house with a wet head now that it’s getting cooler out.

Level of Difficulty: As easy as it gets. If you can wrap your hair in a towel, you can do this!

The Verdict: Worth it, especially since it buys me a few extra minutes of sleep in the morning.

It sped up the drying time of our tester’s hair!

Why I Tried It: My hair is much thinner than it used to be, so I’ll try any tool that adds volume.

Level of Difficulty: It’s a breeze. I pin-curled sections of hair and clamped them in the heated shells.

The Verdict: I had a head full of curls in less than 15 minutes, so it’s my new favorite tool.

The shells come in two sizes, and they heat up in minutes.

HOT BUNS

Why I Tried It: Sadly, my go-to style for my long, straight hair is—down. I was looking for another option.

Level of Difficulty: It’s supereasy. I created my bun in five minutes flat.

The Verdict: I’m sold! It’s a great alternative to a pony. Plus, I love the waves it leaves in my hair when I take it out.

CONAIR CURL SECRET

Why I Tried It: Rollers have been my curl friends for years, so I was eager to try something new.

Level of Difficulty: After a few tries, it’s a piece of cake.

The Verdict: Forget a trip to the beach, this is my new must-have for tousled waves.

It sucks in your hair and releases the perfect curl.
