Mad Men actor Vincent Kartheiser, 33, recently proposed to Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel, 31, PEOPLE confirmed on March 20. Kartheiser and Bledel met on the set of the AMC drama last year when she guest-starred as his character’s extramarital mistress. “They are such a yin and yang,” costar Elisabeth Moss said of the couple. “I’ve known Vinny for 12 years, and Alexis is just the sweetest. I’ve never seen Vincent like this.”
Designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka, the duo behind the perennial fashion line Badgley Mischka, tied the knot on March 22 at New York’s City Hall. Badgley’s twin sister, O’Hara Fottrell, was the only witness, but the couple, both 52, shared the news to PEOPLE: “After 28 years together, the time was right to make it official, and we could not be happier.” The two met at New York’s Parsons The New School of Design and formed their label in 1988.
New York Giants quarter-back and Super Bowl champ Eli Manning, 32, and his wife, Abby, 29, are expecting their second child in June. The college sweethearts, who married in April 2008, are already parents to 2-year-old daughter Ava Frances.

Twilight actress Ashley Greene (inset), 26, suffered a devastating loss when her West Hollywood condo caught fire March 22. The star’s two fox terriers were trapped inside the home and rescuers were only able to save one. Law enforcement officials said that an unattended candle accidently lit her living room couch on fire. Greene, her boyfriend and her brother were in the third-floor unit of Granville Towers when the fire broke out. They were treated for smoke inhalation.
Joe Weider, a bodybuilding trailblazer who discovered Arnold Schwarzenegger and created an empire of fitness magazines such as Men’s Fitness and Shape, died on March 23 at the age of 93. Weider met the teenage Schwarzenegger at a bodybuilding contest and sponsored the young Austrian’s move to the U.S. He also helped the future governor land his first movie role, in 1969’s Hercules in New York. “He was there for me constantly throughout my life, and I will miss him dearly,” said Schwarzenegger. • Chinua Achebe, the renowned Nigerian author who wrote Things Fall Apart, the first book about colonialism written from an African point of view and also one of the first African novels written in English, died on March 21. He was 82. Published in 1958, the book has now sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
MONACO’S NEW ROYAL BABY
Princess Caroline of Monaco (inset), 56, is a first-time grandmother. Her oldest son, Andrea Casiraghi, 28, and his fiancée, Colombian heiress Tatiana Santo Domingo, 29, welcomed a boy named Sacha on March 21. “Both mother and the child are doing well,” a palace statement said. The newest member of the family is third in line to succeed Prince Albert II as Monaco’s ruling sovereign, after his dad and Caroline. In the meantime, the new parents, who have been dating for eight years, plan to wed this year. Andrea will be the first of the late Princess Grace’s grandchildren to marry.
